Rachel, Lauryn, and Jes are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants serving Northwest Indiana and surrounding areas.

When you choose an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with Hoosier Breast Friend, you are connected with a provider who is passionate about supporting you and your baby to meet your goals.

Each family is unique and deserves care that is tailored to their needs. Together, we will assess feeding at the breast and/or with the bottle, milk supply, weight gain and milk transfer, latching, and everything between.  We will look for underlying causes of problems and develop a plan to address what you are experiencing.  You will receive a care plan that is specific to you and your baby.

For the best outcome, we recommend an initial visit and at least one follow up appointment to allow us to re-assess.  This allows us to make any necessary adjustments to the care plan and ensure that your goals are within reach. We believe that lactation support should be accessible to anyone who needs or wants it.

  • My son had a tongue tie and had to have a procedure to fix it. Lauryn was there every step of the way with us from supplemental tube feeds to tongue huggies. I wouldn’t have kept breastfeeding without her knowledge and support. I wish every new mom had a Lauryn to help them.

  • I went from exclusively pumping to exclusively breastfeeding my baby! Rachel is so knowledgeable and able to help you get on the right track! She always respond quickly & makes you feel so important! It’s so nice to have people in our corners to be able to help us & not just push a bottle or nipple shield! I couldn’t have done it without them!

  • Jessica is absolutely phenomenal. I will forever be thankful for all the help she provided to me and my son. I honestly don't think I would have continued to feed as long as I have without her support. I can confidently say that without her support, knowledge, and guidance, my son would not have made all the progress he had, and I would not have continued my BF journey. There are not enough words to express my gratitude.

  • Rachel helped us get back to breast after a short nicu stay! She helped us diagnose, fix, and rehab a lip and tongue tie! I’m so glad I made the choice to invite her into my home. 😁 she also helped me with my oversupply and pumping issues. My nipples are appreciative!! 😂

  • Lauryn and the Hoosier Breast Friend team are truly amazing. After three months of a painful and frustrating journey, I was ready to give up breastfeeding my son much sooner than I wanted to; thankfully, I connected with Lauryn before calling it quits. Not only did she make time to come see us within days of our initial contact, but she was compassionate, kind, and so very knowledgeable about what we were going through. Lauryn quickly identified a number of oral ties that could be causing our struggles and connected us with the very best resources for further evaluation and treatment. She gave us the tools and techniques to make breastfeeding easier and less painful in the meantime, and also went to great lengths to prepare us for our son's frenectomy. Having Lauryn in our corner made the whole process less scary, and she's always available for questions and continuing support. With her clear communication, flexibility, and genuine desire to help moms and babies, Lauryn has been so great to work with. Her professionalism and compassion have made all the difference in our experience, and I highly recommend Hoosier Breast Friend to any mom out there, whether you think you need them now or not.

  • Lauryn helped us sooo much after my son and I had a pretty traumatic visit to a hospital lactation consultation. I wanted to make sure I was using the correct flange size and ask her for any tips as I was only getting 1/2-1 ounce out of my pump. She sized me correctly (hospital recommended a 28mm flange, she suggested 19mm), we did a weighted feed and confirmed my son was able to transfer 4oz himself nursing which gave me peace of mind, she gave me a lot of tips and had me try a 19mm flange. After just a week of trying the different flange size & her tips, instead of 1oz I’m able to pump anywhere from 2-4oz for my sons nighttime bottle. She was not pushy & very reassuring that we were doing the right things and made me feel a lot better compared to my other visit. I’d highly recommend for your breastfeeding questions or troubles 😍

  • Jessica is the most invested, caring, kind and understanding consultant I’ve ever met. She will listen intently and advise graciously with any and all concerns you may have. Truly so thankful and grateful that I know her.

Breastfeeding Data

Data shows that the vast majority of families in Indiana initiate breastfeeding. In 2019, 86% of babies began breastfeeding - an increase from 78% in 2017.

However, at 6 months of age, the percentage of infants receiving any amount of human milk is still dropping drastically (53% in 2019, compared to 47% in 2017). Rates of exclusive breastfeeding are even lower. Only about 47% of babies born in 2019 were exclusively breastfed for their first 3 months, and only 21.5% at 6 months.

The data shows us that most families want or intend to breastfeed and that for most families, early weaning occurred. What can we do to improve these rates? Improve lactation care! If you’re struggling to meet your feeding goals or feel that your baby isn’t thriving with your milk, contact an IBCLC today.
